ulwando
12 Mar 10 - 03 Apr 10

'ulwando' an exhibition of works by printmaker Velile Soha and sculptor Leboana Lefuma opens at 'these four walls' Fine Art Gallery, Friday 12 March and runs until 3 April. Join us in celebrating these idiosyncratic, highly individual, certainly whimsical, even wacky works that reflect upon our contemporary moment and the traditions out of which it comes. Soha and Lefuma offer us an art of supremely African sophistication as a perfect curtain raiser to the global showcase of the coming months.

LEBEOANA LEFUMA

Growing up in a creative, political and dramatic environment, Lebeoana Lefuma's artistic inclinations were encouraged, but it was only after working for a while as a nurse at Groote Schuur hospital, that Lefuma pursude his artistic career.

Lefuma enrolled at the Community Art Project in Cape Town where he completed his studies in visual art, ceramics and dramatic arts.

He has worked with many established ceramacists and has participated in various group shows locally and internationally.

His work reflects the social and economic issues of South Africa, the people he has seen, the stories he has heard. For Lefuma the creative process is instinctive. He believes his art needs to tell the story of our history – the past, present and the future.

VELILE SOHA

Velile Soha developed an interest in art at a very young age. He was encouraged to pursue his talent as as adult. He attended the Community Art Project in Cape Town and went on to study at Rorke's Drift Art School in Zululand. At that time, Rorke's Drift was the principal facility for black artists in South Africa. Encouraged and inspired by his lecturers, he decided to specialise in printmaking.

In 1984 Soha returned to Cape Town and taught young artists at Nyanga Art Centre and CAP for several years before devoting himself full time to his artistic career.

Soha has participated in several Thupelo art workshops and has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions both locally and abroad. Currently he is an artist in residence at the Greatmore Studios in Cape Town.

Inspired by his own experiences, Soha's art gives his audience an insight as to how people live their lives in the townships and rural areas of South Africa.

on the rhodes
05 Feb 10 - 27 Feb 10

'on the rhodes' opens at these four walls Fine Art Gallery on the 5 February.

Some two decades on this exhibition gathers together a generation of artists schooled in the Department of Fine Art at Grahamstown's Rhode's University in the late 1980's and early 1990's. From that common ground in the small frontier city at the end of apardheid have led various roads followed by these diverse artists, some very well known, others less so.

'on the rhodes' provides an opportunity for reflection and retrospect, a celebration of shared skills and outlooks, but most of all it suggests the exciting destinations still promised by those early trajectories. It is a timely show and ironically fitting that these once-Grahamstown artists now living all over the world should reconvene momentarily in Cape Town.

Artists exhibiting are Cathy Layzell, Anthony Struik, Benjamin Coutouvidis, Herman Niebuhr, Diana Page, Jane Henderson, Jeremy Franklin, Larissa Hollis, Bretan Ann Moolman, Cindy Britz, Mary Visser, Janet Anderson, Tom Gubb, Ian Garrett, Carl Becker, Kerri Evans, Richard Mather- Pike, Carl Schonland, John Hodgkiss,Mary Slater
